Sometimes people use titles that sound impressive, and in many states there are few or no regulations around some terms like nutritionist. How do you know then that you are seeing someone who is a qualified healthcare professional to counsel you on nutrition? There are two qualifications recognized by many states for licensing to provide nutrition counseling or medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and reimbursed by many insurances for their services - a registered dietitian (RD) also sometimes using the title registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), or a certified nutrition specialist (CNS).
